Family Formation

Family Formation

FAMILY FORMATION equips parents to pass on a well-formed Catholic faith as they fulfill their role as the primary educators of their children. Children from Kindergarten through Grade 6 and their parents meet once a month. At these meetings, parents are provided with weekly Home Lessons to instruct their children until the next monthly gathering.

The Family Formation program is driven by Scripture, is doctrinally sound, references the Catechism of the Catholic Church and has been approved by the United States Bishops.

Family Formation is a truly innovative kindergarten-6th grade Catholic religious education program used by parishes and families across the US and Canada. Created, developed, and experienced at the Church of Saint Paul over the past 30+ years, Family Formation has proven itself to be the answer to the catechetical crisis of the past several decades. Based on the principle that "Parents are the primary educators in the Faith" (GDC 255), Family Formation revolves around weekly family gatherings where home lessons, provided by the church, are worked on and discussed by parents with their children. Then there are monthly gatherings at the church which allow K-6 grade students to learn about a topic in a grade-level classroom setting with a trained catechist, while at these same monthly gatherings their parents receive a teaching and are being formed in the Faith on the same topic. These shared learning experiences spill over into the family's everyday life as they open the doors to discussion of the Catholic Faith and begin to live and breathe the life of the Church.

Specifically Family Formation:

  • Brings the Catholic Faith alive through dynamic lessons, activities, and audios
  • Follows a three-year cycle and points families to what is happening in the Church year.
  • Is driven by Sacred Scripture and Tradition
  • Is faithful to the teaching of the Magisterium
  • References the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • Provides adult formation and grade specific classroom curriculum
  • Provides weekly family home lessons, which enable “parents to be the primary educators of their children in the Faith "
